How To Pack A Guitar For Moving If You Don't Have Its Case

Blog

If you have a guitar you need to move, then you are probably worried about its safety during transit. This is particularly true if the guitar doesn't have a case. Only a guitar player can appreciate how delicate the instrument is even though it doesn't look that way to others. Luckily, people ship guitars without their cases all the time; yours should be fine as long as you take the following measures:

Gather the Packing Materials

The most important thing to remember when packing a guitar without a case is that the instrument is more fragile and delicate than it looks, so it needs protection. The protection starts by gathering the packing materials that should include things like:

  • Strong shipping box
  • Packing paper
  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap

Ask your chosen moving company for these moving supplies if you don't have some already in your house; in fact, many moving companies also offer packing services for such things.

Remove Detachable Parts

Don't pack the guitar with its removable parts; that will just increase the risk of damage to the guitar. If you are the owner or regular user of the guitar, then you should be able to remove the detachable parts such as the capo, bridge, bridge cover, strap, and other parts you can easily remove and later replace. Pack the items in a separate box, but label it and keep it close to the guitar to reduce the risk of losing it during transportation.

Loosen the Strings

Transporting the guitar with its tout strings is not advisable because the strings will put the guitar under too much pressure and even damage its surface (for example, if the strings snap). Fortunately, you don't have to remove the strings completely to manage this risk; loosening them should be able to take care of the risk.

Wrap Up the Guitar

Wrapping up the guitar is the single most important step in preserving it during the move. First, wrap it with packing paper and then follow that up with bubble wrap. Next, place the guitar in your chosen moving box and fill up any spaces with padding materials. For maximum protection, the moving box should be roughly the size of the guitar so that there isn't too much space left with the guitar in the box. Wads of crumpled paper or soft towels should be able to give your guitar maximum protection in the box.
