3 Ways To Keep Your Self-Storage Unit Organized And Protected So You Always Find What You Need

Blog

One of the advantages of renting a self-storage unit is that you can set it up to get the best use out of it. You may want the unit to store survival food, seasonal items, or inventory for your small business. You may need frequent and easy access to your belongings, or you may not even open the unit for months at a time. Either way, you want to use the best methods and equipment for organizing your unit. Here are three ideas.

1. Place Wire Shelves Against The Walls

You can't make permanent changes to a self-storage unit, such as nailing shelves to the wall, but you can bring in your own shelving units. Wiring is a good choice because openings in the wire allow you to hang things with S-hooks and slide in rods for hanging clothes and comforters rather than stuffing them in boxes.

Wire shelves are also sturdy enough to hold heavy items and boxes. Plus, they don't have solid shelves, so there are fewer places for dust to collect and pests to gather. There are many advantages of storing items on shelves because they won't get wet as they might if they were on the floor, and individual items and boxes can be seen more easily. Additionally, you can access what you need without having to move a bunch of other boxes around to get to the one on the bottom.

2. Place Pallets On The Floor

Your things will probably stay nice and dry while they're in storage, but you never know when your unit might flood or draw dampness. Rather than rest things like boxes and furniture directly on the floor, place them on pallets.

The pallets keep all your belongings elevated a few inches, and they also help with air circulation. A good thing about pallets is you can often pick them up free when companies throw them out. If you collect used pallets from a dumpster, make sure they are completely dry before putting them in your storage unit so they don't take on a musty odor.

3. Store Items In Clear Totes

Clear plastic totes are ideal for use in a self-storage unit. You can see what's in the tote without having to open it and shuffle things around. When you place clear totes on wire shelves, you can walk in your unit and see at a glance where everything is. This is beneficial if you're storing supplies for your business or extra household goods.

Not everything will fit in plastic totes, but they are perfect for holding folded clothing, toys, small appliances, tools, and anything that's small and not too fragile. You may still want to use moving boxes for books and fragile items since those specialty boxes have sturdy construction and padding for protection.
