Employeee Relocation Moving Packages: Ask These Questions First

Blog

If you have taken a new position within your current company and your employer is going to pay for the move to a new location, there are details to work out before the big moving day. You will want to know exactly what is in the employee relocation services package that you're getting.

You also want to be prepared for the move properly. Here are some of the things you'll want to talk about in advance, so you don't have unexpected expenses during the move, and so everything is done efficiently.

Moving Costs and Payments

Ask for the documented details about the moving costs and payment for the move. If you are going to be given a set amount of money, do you have to submit the bills to HR, or do they give you that amount in the form of a check or direct deposit?

You want to know if your employer is paying the moving company directly, if they have a team of movers they want you to use, and if the money all has to go to the moving company directly. If you get a relocation moving package, and there is a set amount of money, you may be able to use what is left over once the movers are paid for other expenses, like utility hookups, housing, and more.

Moving Company Information

Your employer may have a moving company they prefer you use as a part of the relocation services package. They also may use these factors to total up the cost of the move:

  • Square footage of your current residence
  • Full-service move or just item pickup
  • Multiple floors of the residence and an attic or basement
  • The distance that needs to be traveled for delivery of the items
  • The time it takes to load and unload

If the company is to show up and take what you already have packed, it will be cheaper than if the team is arriving and packing your items and disassembling your furniture.

It can be a great weight lifted when your company is going to pay for the costs of your move when you take a new position with the company. If you are to find your own moving company, get a set price from movers in your area, and check into their credentials. Also, make sure they have enough insurance coverage to cover the cost of all your items that will be loaded into the moving truck.
